Concern grows over homelessness in Swindon as winter approaches
Swindon Advertiser Swindon Together 3 November 2026

As temperatures begin to fall, concerns are growing about homelessness across Swindon. With more people facing uncertainty over housing and the challenges of sleeping rough during winter, local services and community organisations are working to provide support. But what help is available, and how can residents make a difference?
The reality of homelessness in Swindon
Winter can be a particularly difficult time for people experiencing homelessness.
While many of us look forward to warmer homes, Christmas celebrations and spending time with family, others face the prospect of another night without somewhere safe and warm to sleep.
Homelessness is not always visible. It can mean sleeping on the streets, staying temporarily with friends or family, living in unsuitable accommodation or facing the constant fear of losing somewhere to live.
Behind every situation is an individual story, and the reasons people become homeless are often complex.
Additional emergency beds announced
There has been some positive news locally.
Ten additional emergency beds have been made available in Swindon at The Haven Day Centre, following a £405,000 government-funded initiative to tackle rough sleeping.
The additional provision is intended to help people get off the streets, while outreach workers continue supporting individuals with access to accommodation, healthcare and longer-term housing options.
The Haven also provides practical support, including meals, hot drinks, showers, laundry facilities and access to computers.
This is an important contribution, particularly as the colder months approach.
What happens during severe weather?
Swindon Borough Council operates a Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP), which can provide emergency accommodation for people sleeping rough during periods of severe weather.
At the time of writing, the council’s website states that SWEP is not currently active.
However, people sleeping rough or concerned about someone they see on the streets should not assume that help is unavailable.
The council continues to provide homelessness support throughout the year.
How can residents help?
Homelessness is not something that one organisation can tackle alone.
There are practical ways members of the Swindon community can help:
* Report concerns about someone sleeping rough through StreetLink.
* Support local homelessness charities through donations or volunteering.
* Share information about available support services.
* Treat people experiencing homelessness with dignity, kindness and respect.
* Look out for neighbours, friends or family members who may be at risk of losing their homes.
Sometimes, simply listening without judgement can make a difference.

A community responsibility
Homelessness should never become something we simply walk past or accept as part of everyday life.
Swindon has residents, charities, volunteers, community groups and organisations who want to make a difference. Working together, sharing information and supporting those most in need can help create a more compassionate town.
As winter approaches, the question is not simply how many people need somewhere to sleep. It is how we, as a community, make sure people are not forgotten.
Swindon Together believes that everyone deserves dignity, compassion and the opportunity to have a safe place to call home.
If you are concerned about someone sleeping rough or are facing homelessness yourself, please use the support contacts above.
